How To Make Your Morning Routine Easier
Mornings before school or day care can sometimes feel rushed and stressful for families. However, with a little preparation, mornings can become calmer and much easier for both parents and children.
A helpful place to start is the night before. Making sure your child has completed any homework and laying out their clean uniform ready for the morning can prevent the last-minute search for missing socks or shirts. Packing your child’s lunchbox ahead of time and having breakfast items ready can also make the start of the day feel more organised and relaxed.
Bedtime is also a wonderful opportunity to help your child feel secure about the day ahead. When you tuck your child into bed, spend a few moments talking about what tomorrow may look like. Children often feel much safer when they have an idea of what to expect. It is also helpful to remind them that sometimes plans can change, but if they do, you and your child will always have a backup plan together.
In the morning, some families find it helpful to use a simple “getting ready” chart. As your child moves through their morning routine, they can tick off each task. Many children enjoy this because it turns getting ready into something positive and gives them a sense of achievement.
As a parent, it can help to remind yourself that staying calm is one of the most powerful things you can do. Yelling or rushing often increases stress for everyone, while a calm and steady approach helps children feel safe and supported.
If possible, try to sit down and have breakfast with your child. This quiet moment together can set a positive tone for the day. Ask your child what they are looking forward to the most and help them begin the day feeling confident and excited.
Before leaving for school or day-care, remind your child that they are wearing their Magic Coat, which has everything they need to help them feel brave, calm and ready for the day ahead.
When it is time to say goodbye, many families find comfort in having a special goodbye ritual. A secret hug, a hand signal or a small routine can remind your child how loved they are and reassure them that you will see them again after school.
For children who experience separation anxiety, you can also remind them about Meshell and The Magic String of Shells. Meshell helps children remember that even when we are apart, we are always connected to the people we love.
Small routines like these can make a big difference in helping children begin their day feeling safe, prepared and ready to learn.
